The spread is not explained by differences in diamond quality. It is not explained by differences in certification standards. It is explained entirely by retail channel selection. The same buyer, walking into four different Canadian retail channels on the same day, would pay four materially different prices for what is gemologically the same stone.

National mall chains averaged $5,410 CAD. Canadian independents averaged $4,050 CAD. International online retailers averaged $2,460 CAD. Canadian direct to consumer online brands averaged $2,110 CAD. The tiers represent four distinct retail models operating in the Canadian market, each serving the same underlying demand for IGI certified lab grown diamond engagement and wedding jewelry.

National mall chains are the largest legacy jewelry retailers with physical storefronts in Canadian shopping centers. Canadian independents are owner operated regional jewelers with one to five storefronts. International online retailers are direct to consumer brands that ship to Canada. Wholesale prices for 1 carat F VS1 lab grown diamonds have fallen approximately 84 percent between 2020 and 2025, according to the BriteCo Lab Diamond Price Index. National mall chain retail prices in Canada have not declined proportionally. The delta between wholesale decline and retail adjustment is captured by the retail channel rather than passed to consumers.

Per Paul Zimnisky Diamond Analytics, the wholesale price of a 1 carat F color VS1 clarity lab grown diamond has moved from approximately $5,000 USD in 2016 to under $1,000 USD in 2026. The Canadian retail pricing in national chains does not reflect that wholesale trajectory. Markup structures established during earlier wholesale pricing environments have persisted even as the underlying cost basis has changed.
