Diamond Size Chart: Carat to Millimetres for Every Shape

Carat is a weight. Millimetres are what you see. This diamond size chart converts one to the other for eleven shapes, and states the ratio every other chart leaves out.

9 minute read·Published September 18, 2026·Last updated September 18, 2026

Dimensions are midpoints of published reference bands for well proportioned stones, from VRAI, cross checked against With Clarity and StoneAlgo; heart figures are from StoneAlgo. Actual stones vary with depth and ratio, so the measured dimensions on a grading report govern. Draco prices are in Canadian dollars at the 10K gold base, read October 14, 2026.

A diamond size chart converts carat weight into millimetres. Carat is a unit of mass, one fifth of a gram, and it says nothing directly about how large a stone looks. Millimetres across the face are what the eye reads. The chart is the bridge between the number on the price tag and the object on the hand.

The three tables below cover eleven shapes from half a carat to five carats. Round and square outlines are given as a single width. Elongated outlines are given as length by width, because a single figure would hide the thing that makes them elongated. Every figure is the midpoint of a published reference band for a well proportioned stone.

Read down any column and the first pattern appears immediately. Going from 1 carat to 2 carats, a round grows from 6.5 to 8.2 millimetres, about 26 percent wider, while the weight has doubled. From 2 to 4 carats it grows from 8.2 to 10.3, another 26 percent, for another doubling. Weight scales with volume. Size, as the eye reads it, scales with area. The chart is the arithmetic of that gap.

Read across the 1 carat row and the second pattern appears: the same weight produces outlines from 5.6 millimetres to 10.5 millimetres along the longest axis. That is not a rounding difference. It is the difference between a stone that sits inside the width of a finger and one that spans it.

The order is consistent at every weight. Marquise is longest, then pear, oval, emerald and trillion. Round sits in the middle of the group. Heart, cushion, asscher and princess read smallest, because their outlines are compact. The princess also hides a large share of its weight below the girdle, in a deep pavilion where it cannot be seen.

This is the whole reason a shape decision cannot be made on carat weight alone. A buyer who wants a stone that reads long chooses from the top of the chart. A buyer who wants a stone that reads bright and compact chooses from the bottom, and pays for depth rather than spread. Neither is wrong. The chart makes the trade visible before the money moves.

03
The caveat

Published size charts disagree, and the ratio explains why

Compare three published size charts and the round column agrees almost to the tenth of a millimetre: 6.4 to 6.6 at 1 carat in every source consulted for this page. The oval column does not. One reference lists a 1 carat oval at 7.7 by 5.7 millimetres. Another lists it at 8.4 by 5.7. Neither is wrong.

Why references disagree: the length to width ratio behind each 1 carat figure
Shape Ratio in this chart 1 ct in this chart, mm Same carat at a different ratio
Oval About 1.47 to 1 8.4 × 5.7 7.7 × 5.7 at 1.35 to 1
Pear About 1.65 to 1 9.2 × 5.6 Shorter at a rounder outline
Marquise About 2.05 to 1 10.5 × 5.1 10 × 5 at 2.0 to 1
Emerald About 1.45 to 1 7.3 × 5.0 7 × 5 at 1.4 to 1
Radiant About 1.27 to 1 6.7 × 5.3 Squarer cuts run near 6 × 5.5
Cushion About 1.05 to 1 6.3 × 6.0 Square cushions run near 5.5

The difference is the length to width ratio the publisher assumed and did not state. An oval cut at 1.35 to 1 is short and full. An oval cut at 1.47 to 1 is longer and slimmer. Both weigh a carat. The longer one measures longer, and a chart built from one population of stones will disagree with a chart built from another.

This chart states its ratios in the table above so that the figures can be checked and adjusted. If the stone in front of you is squarer than the stated ratio, expect it to run shorter than the table at the same weight. If it is longer, expect the reverse. The round column has no ratio to argue about, which is why it is the one column every chart agrees on.

"A size chart without a stated ratio is a guess with decimal places. The round column agrees across every published chart, 6.4 to 6.6 millimetres at 1 carat, because it is the only shape with nothing to assume."

Garrett McMartin, Founder, Draco Diamond

Depth is the other variable. A stone cut deep hides weight below the girdle and measures smaller face up than the chart. A stone cut shallow spreads wider than the chart and gives up light return to do it. The chart describes a well proportioned stone; the grading report describes the actual one.

The round column gets its own table because most people calibrate everything else against it. Half millimetre steps are also the scale at which buying decisions turn.

Three rows are worth memorising. Five millimetres is half a carat. Six and a half millimetres is one carat. Eight millimetres is two carats. Everything else on the chart can be estimated from those three anchors, and they are the three sizes that appear most often in stud earrings, pendants and tennis bracelets.

Notice how the carat figure accelerates as the diameter climbs. From 5 to 6.5 millimetres the weight doubles. From 8 to 10 millimetres it nearly doubles again. This is why a stone that looks only slightly larger than another can cost considerably more: the price follows the weight, and the weight is growing faster than the outline.

Earrings

What size are diamond stud earrings by total weight?

Round stud earrings, total weight to the diameter of each stone
Pair Per stone Diameter Draco price, 10K base
1 ctw pair 0.50 ct 5.0 to 5.3 mm CAD 711
2 ctw pair 1.00 ct 6.4 to 6.6 mm CAD 999
3 ctw pair 1.50 ct 7.3 to 7.5 mm CAD 1,299
4 ctw pair 2.00 ct 8.1 to 8.3 mm See catalogue

Stud earrings are the place a size chart is most often misread, because they are sold by total weight across the pair. A 2 carat total weight pair is not a 2 carat stone. It is two 1 carat stones, each about 6.5 millimetres across, one in each ear.

Halve the total weight and read the round table. A 1 carat total weight pair is two half carat stones of about 5.2 millimetres. A 3 carat total weight pair is two 1.5 carat stones of about 7.4 millimetres. A 4 carat total weight pair is two 2 carat stones of about 8.2 millimetres. At that size a stud starts to read as a statement rather than a detail.

At Draco the 1 carat total weight pair is CAD 711 at the 10K gold base. The 2 carat pair is CAD 999 and the 3 carat pair CAD 1,299. Every pair is IGI certified at E to F colour and VS2 or better. The step from 1 carat to 2 carats total weight adds 1.4 millimetres to each stone; the step from 2 to 3 adds 0.9. The chart shows why the first step is the one people notice.

Ear wearing a round brilliant lab grown diamond stud earring, Draco Diamond
Total weight is for the pair. A 2 carat pair is two 1 carat stones, about 6.5 millimetres each.

The same logic applies to a tennis bracelet, where the chart describes one stone in the line rather than the total. A 5 carat round line on a 7 inch bracelet uses about 62 stones of roughly 0.08 carat, each about 2.8 millimetres across. Quarter carat rounds, about four millimetres each, would fill the same length at about 11 carats. Draco lists its 5 carat round brilliant tennis bracelet at CAD 2,920 and the elongated cuts at CAD 3,201. On that piece the outline is close to a free choice, and the width follows from it. See the earring collection and the bracelet collection.

06
The method

Start from millimetres, not carats

01Start from millimetres, not carats

Decide how wide you want the stone to read on the hand or the ear, in millimetres, then find the carat weight that produces it in your shape. Two stones of the same carat weight can differ by five millimetres of length depending on the outline, so the carat figure on its own does not describe what you will see.

02Read the row for your shape, not the round row

Round is the reference every other shape is compared against, and it is the wrong row for anything else. A 1 carat princess measures about 5.6 millimetres square. A 1 carat marquise runs 10.5 millimetres long. Same weight, and the chart shows them a full row apart.

03Check the length to width ratio the chart assumed

Every elongated figure in a size chart depends on a ratio the publisher chose and rarely states. This chart states its ratios. If the stone you are considering is squarer or longer than that ratio, its length will be shorter or longer than the table, at the same weight.

04Halve the total weight for earrings

Stud earrings are sold by total weight across the pair. A 2 carat total weight pair is two 1 carat stones, each about 6.5 millimetres across. Read the per stone weight, then read the chart.

05Compare against something you already own

A ring or earring you wear is the best scale reference there is. Measure the stone across its widest point with a ruler, find that figure in the round column, and you have a calibrated sense of what every other row means on you.

06Confirm the dimensions on the grading report

Every IGI and GIA report states the measured dimensions of the stone in millimetres to two decimal places. That figure is the truth for the stone in front of you; the chart is the average for its weight and shape.

Every Draco diamond is IGI certified at E to F colour and VS2 or better and ships with its certificate. The report can be provided on request before purchase and verified free at IGI.org. It states the stone's measured dimensions in millimetres.

FAQ
Common questions

Sizes, answered

How many millimetres is a 1 carat diamond?

About 6.5 millimetres across for a round brilliant. Other shapes at 1 carat: princess about 5.6 millimetres square, asscher 5.8, cushion 6.3 by 6.0, radiant 6.7 by 5.3, emerald cut 7.3 by 5.0, oval 8.4 by 5.7, pear 9.2 by 5.6, marquise 10.5 by 5.1, trillion 7.2 and heart 6.4. Figures are midpoints for well proportioned stones.

How big is a 2 carat diamond compared with a 1 carat?

A 2 carat round measures about 8.2 millimetres across against 6.5 for a 1 carat, roughly 26 percent wider for double the weight. Weight scales with volume while size reads as area, so doubling the carat never doubles the apparent size.

Why do size charts give different numbers?

Because elongated shapes depend on a length to width ratio that most charts assume without stating. A 1 carat oval is 7.7 by 5.7 millimetres at a ratio of 1.35 to 1 and 8.4 by 5.7 at 1.47 to 1. The round column agrees across every published chart because a round has no ratio to assume.

What size are 2 carat total weight stud earrings?

Two 1 carat stones of about 6.5 millimetres each, one in each ear. Stud earrings are sold by total weight across the pair, so halve the listed weight and read the round row of the chart for the size of each stone.

Which diamond shape looks biggest per carat?

Marquise, at about 10.5 millimetres long for 1 carat, followed by pear, oval, emerald and trillion. Princess reads smallest at about 5.6 millimetres square because much of its weight sits deep in the pavilion. Length and face up area are not the same thing, so a longer outline is not always more visible diamond.

Are the dimensions on a size chart exact?

No. They are averages for well proportioned stones of each shape and weight. A stone cut deep measures smaller face up than the chart; a stone cut shallow measures larger. The measured dimensions on an IGI or GIA grading report are exact for the stone they describe.

Do lab grown diamonds follow the same size chart?

Yes. A lab grown diamond is the same material at the same density as a mined one, so a carat of either occupies the same volume and cuts to the same dimensions. Every Draco diamond is IGI certified, and the report states the measured millimetres.
