Five Stone Rings: The Anniversary Guide
The five stone ring is the one piece of fine jewellery with an argument built into it. Whether that argument matters is a separate question from whether the ring is the right buy.
Prices read from the Draco Diamond catalogue on August 27, 2026, quoted at the 10K gold base in Canadian dollars. Metal percentages read from the Draco product configurator on the same date. Diamonds are IGI certified at E to F colour and VS2 or better. The ruby and diamond ring contains natural rubies alongside lab grown diamonds.

What does a five stone ring actually mean?
A five stone ring sets five stones across the top of the band in a single row. The traditional reading is that it marks five of something, which is why it turns up as a fifth anniversary gift and why jewellers sell it that way.
That is the story. The reason most people actually choose it is simpler and has nothing to do with counting. Spreading a given weight across five settings makes a ring read wider across the finger than putting the same weight into one stone. A five stone ring occupies more visual space per carat than a solitaire does.
It is worth being clear about the trade. Five stones of equal total weight are each smaller than one stone of that weight, and smaller stones return less light individually. What you buy is coverage, not brilliance. Whether that is the right trade depends entirely on whether you want the ring to be noticed as a line or as a point.

Graduation is the common refinement. Rather than five identical stones, the centre is largest and the sizes step down toward the shoulders. That gives the ring a focal point without abandoning the width, and it is why most five stone rings read as one piece rather than as five separate settings.
How much does a five stone ring cost?
| Ring | Total carat | Setting | Price CAD |

| Ruby and diamond five stone | 3.4ct TW | Alternating ruby and diamond | 2,100 |
| Oval five stone | 8ct TW | Five graduated ovals | 3,720 |
| Marquise anniversary band | 5.62ct TW | Marquise set continuously | 3,699 |

Three fixed points from the catalogue. A 3.4 carat ruby and lab grown diamond five stone is CAD 2,100. An 8 carat oval five stone is CAD 3,720. A 5.62 carat marquise anniversary band is CAD 3,699.
The interesting pair is the last two. The oval five stone carries 42 percent more carat weight than the marquise band and costs CAD 21 more. That is the clearest illustration available that total carat weight is not the thing you are paying for. Setting labour is. A marquise band sets stones continuously and each one has to be oriented individually, which is far more work than five settings across a top.
The ruby and diamond ring is the entry point at CAD 2,100 and it does something the all diamond rings cannot. Alternating colour makes the five count legible instantly, which matters if the number is the point of the gift rather than an afterthought.
Should you buy five stone or eternity?
| Form | Construction | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Five stone | Five stones across the top | Marks five of something, reads wide on the finger |
| Eternity | Stones the whole way round | Cannot be resized, most stone for the money |
| Half eternity | Stones across the top half | Resizable, sits flat against a wedding band |
| Solitaire | One stone | Reads as engagement, not anniversary |
These are genuinely different objects and the choice is not primarily about money.
Full eternity carries stones the entire way round the band. It gives the most stone per dollar because there is no plain metal being paid for, and it looks identical from every angle, which matters because rings rotate on the finger. It cannot be resized.
Half eternity sets the top half and leaves the underside plain. It resizes, it sits comfortably against the palm, and it costs less for the same visible effect. It also rotates out of position and needs straightening.
Five stone is the widest read for the least total weight. It has a defined top and bottom like a half eternity, and the five stone count is legible in a way a continuous line is not.
"Total carat weight is not what you are paying for on an anniversary ring. Setting labour is. Eight carats across five settings costs the same as 5.62 carats set continuously."
Garrett McMartin, Founder, Draco Diamond
If the ring is a gift marking a specific number of years, five stone is the only form that says so. If it is simply the ring someone wanted, eternity almost always gives more for the money.
Which anniversary rings resize and stack?
Two questions decide whether an anniversary ring works day to day, and neither is visible in a photograph taken from above.
Resizing. A full eternity ring cannot be resized. Resizing works by cutting the band, adding or removing metal, and rejoining it, and a full eternity has no plain metal to cut. Half eternity and five stone rings both resize normally because the underside is plain. Draco includes free resizing, but the physics still apply, so if finger size is likely to change the form decision is being made now.
Stacking. An anniversary ring worn beside an engagement ring has to sit flush against it. What prevents that is the side profile: a raised centre stone, a curved shank, or a setting that projects below the band. Look at the ring from the side before buying, because from above every ring looks flat.

If the ring will sit against an existing band, match that band metal rather than choosing on price. Two different white metals beside each other read as a mistake even when both are correct on their own.
What do metal and setting height change?
Metal at Draco is a fixed percentage of the 10K gold base on every piece. Sterling silver runs 30 percent below, 14K adds 18 percent, 18K adds 38 percent and platinum adds 45 percent. On the 8 carat oval five stone that is CAD 2,604 in silver through to CAD 5,394 in platinum.
Colour is free. White, yellow and rose cost the same at any given karat. The trade is hardness against tone: 10K is the hardest gold alloy and the most scratch resistant, 18K carries the richest colour and marks more readily. White gold is rhodium plated and the plating wears; platinum is naturally white and never needs replating.
Setting height matters more on an anniversary ring than on almost anything else, because these rings are worn every day and usually against a second band. A lower setting takes constant contact better. A higher setting shows the stones from the side but catches on fabric and knocks against the neighbouring ring. Neither is wrong; they fail differently.

How do you choose an anniversary ring?
An anniversary ring worn beside an engagement ring has to sit flat against it. Five stone rings with a raised centre or a curved profile will not sit flush. Check the profile from the side, not from above, because that is where stacking fails.
Five stone, half eternity and full eternity are different objects. Full eternity carries the most stone per dollar and cannot be resized. Half eternity resizes and stacks. Five stone reads widest across the finger for the least total weight.
Five larger stones read as a statement. Five smaller stones read as a line. The 8 carat oval five stone and the 5.62 carat marquise band cost within CAD 21 of each other and look nothing alike.
A ring worn every day beside a wedding band takes constant contact. Lower settings survive that better. Higher settings show the stones off but catch on fabric and knock against the band.
Silver runs 30 percent below the 10K base, 14K adds 18 percent, 18K adds 38 percent and platinum adds 45 percent. If the ring will sit against an existing band, match that band's metal rather than optimising the price.
Full eternity rings cannot be resized because there is no plain metal to work with. If finger size is likely to change, that decision is being made now whether or not anyone says so.

Anniversary ring FAQ
What does a five stone diamond ring symbolise?
Traditionally it marks five of something, which is why it appears as a fifth anniversary gift. In practice most buyers choose it because five stones read wider across the finger than a single stone of the same total weight, so the symbolism is often secondary to how the ring looks.
How much does a five stone diamond ring cost?
At Draco a 3.4 carat ruby and lab grown diamond five stone ring is CAD 2,100 at the 10K gold base, an 8 carat oval five stone is CAD 3,720 and a 5.62 carat marquise anniversary band is CAD 3,699. All diamonds are IGI certified at E to F colour and VS2 or better.
Can a five stone or eternity ring be resized?
Five stone and half eternity rings resize normally because the underside of the band is plain metal. A full eternity ring cannot be resized, because resizing means cutting and rejoining the band and there is no plain section to work with. Draco includes free resizing where the form allows it.
Is a five stone ring or an eternity ring better value?
Eternity rings generally give more stone per dollar because none of the price is plain metal. A five stone ring reads wider on the finger for less total carat weight and is the only form that makes the number five legible, so the better buy depends on whether the count matters to you.
Will an anniversary ring sit flush against an engagement ring?
That is decided by the side profile rather than the top. A raised centre stone, a curved shank or a setting that projects below the band will all prevent a flush fit. Look at the ring from the side before buying, since every ring looks flat from above.
What does each metal add to an anniversary ring?
Metal is a fixed percentage of the 10K gold base. Sterling silver runs 30 percent below, 14K adds 18 percent, 18K adds 38 percent and platinum adds 45 percent. On the 8 carat oval five stone that is CAD 2,604 in silver through to CAD 5,394 in platinum.
Does more carat weight mean a higher price on these rings?
Not reliably. The 8 carat oval five stone carries 42 percent more carat weight than the 5.62 carat marquise band and costs CAD 21 more, because the marquise band sets stones continuously and each one has to be oriented individually. Setting labour often matters more than weight.
