Resizing is priced by metal, direction and stones. At one Toronto goldsmith, sizing a 14K band down costs CAD 125, and sizing it up one size costs CAD 180.

Platinum CAD 170 CAD 250 CAD 100
Silver, no stones CAD 45 CAD 60 CAD 8

The prices are FTJCo's published 2026 list. FTJCo draws its repair pricing from the Geller Blue Book, a standard reference for jewellery repair, and bills workshop time at CAD 175 an hour.1

Every job carries a minimum charge of CAD 95 plus HST. Sizing down includes a credit for the metal removed from the ring.1

Each extra size adds to the bill. Taking a platinum band up two sizes costs CAD 250 for the first and CAD 100 for the second, CAD 350 in all.1

US prices sit in a similar range. One US jeweller quotes US$50 to US$150 to size a ring down and US$80 to US$250 to size it up.3

02
Up or down

Why does sizing up cost more than sizing down?

Sizing up adds metal, and sizing down takes it away. Adding means cutting the band, fitting a new piece of metal and soldering two joins. Taking away means one cut and one join.

The price list shows the gap in every metal. In 14K gold, up costs CAD 55 more than down. In 18K, CAD 75 more. In platinum, CAD 80 more.1

Metal is part of it. Sizing down returns metal to the jeweller, and FTJCo credits it against the price. Sizing up uses new metal, and platinum costs more to add than silver.1

Direction also sets the difficulty. Removing metal from a ring is simpler work than adding it.6

That is why jewellers advise a buyer who is unsure of a size to choose the larger one. The fix, if it is needed, is the cheaper one.

03
Two cities

A platinum resize costs CAD 250 in Toronto and CAD 190 in Granby

Prices vary more between jewellers than between metals. The same job, one size up on a platinum band with a few stones, costs CAD 60 less at a jeweller in Granby, Quebec than in Toronto.

Platinum CAD 250 CAD 190
Silver, no stones CAD 60 CAD 60

Mathieu Blanchard Joaillerie in Granby lists a base price plus a charge per size. Platinum with stones under 4 mm is CAD 160 plus CAD 30 a size, which reads as CAD 190 for one size.2

Gold is harder to compare. The Granby list prices gold on 10K, while the Toronto list starts at 14K. Silver lines up exactly: CAD 60 for one size up, in both cities.21

Ask for a written quote before work starts. Give the metal, the band width, the number of stones and the number of sizes. Those four facts set the price.

04
What adds cost

Stones, width and extra sizes raise the price

Three things push a resize above the base price: stones along the band, a band wider than 4 mm, and every size beyond the first. Each one adds work at the bench.

Stones cost the most. At FTJCo, a 14K band with 36 to 50 stones costs CAD 195 to size down and CAD 270 to size up, CAD 70 to 90 more than a band with four or fewer.1

Width costs more per size. In Granby, a gold band over 4 mm wide costs CAD 30 a size, against CAD 15 for a narrower band. Platinum rises from CAD 30 to CAD 40.2

Very thin bands have a floor. FTJCo will not resize a band narrower than 1.5 mm.1

Cannot be resized

Which rings cannot be resized?

Eternity bands, tungsten, ceramic and wood generally cannot be resized. Titanium is disputed, channel settings are risky, and tension settings lose their grip when cut.

Eternity bands are the clearest case. Stones run all the way around, so there is no plain metal to cut, and the design makes them impossible to resize.4

Hard and alternative materials are next. Tungsten is nearly impossible to resize, and wood, ceramic and other alternative materials typically cannot be resized.4

Titanium divides jewellers. One says it cannot be resized because of its hardness. Another says it sometimes can, though the work is more complex than gold.43

Channel settings hold stones in a continuous track. Resizing one means adjusting the whole channel, which can loosen the stones.4

Tension settings hold the stone by spring pressure in the band. Resizing removes that spring loading, so some designs move only two sizes, and some makers recast the ring instead.7

Ask before you buy. If a design cannot be resized, the size you order is the size you keep.

06
How many sizes

Most rings move two sizes at most

A conventional band in gold or platinum can usually be moved about two sizes in either direction. Beyond that, the ring's proportions and setting start to suffer.

As a general rule, a ring moves two sizes up or down from where it started.5

One US jeweller puts it slightly tighter: most rings can be resized up or down by one to two sizes.3

Each extra size costs more. At FTJCo, the second size up adds CAD 60 in 14K gold, CAD 70 in 18K and CAD 100 in platinum.1

Stretching a band into a larger size is not the same as resizing it. Ask how the work will be done, and get the method in writing.

A ring with a plain band at the back is the easiest to size. The work happens in the plain metal at the base.
07
Avoiding the cost

The cheapest resize is the one you never need

Measuring well before you order costs less than any resize. A rigid sizer at home, read at the end of the day, gets most buyers to the right size the first time.

Draco posts a plastic ring sizer to you at no cost, anywhere in Canada or the United States. Request it below, measure three times, then order.

If the fit still needs adjusting, every Draco ring includes one complimentary resize within 60 days of delivery, up to two sizes up or down. You cover shipping to us, and Draco covers the return trip.8

Allow 10 to 14 business days. Some ring designs cannot be resized, and Draco discloses this before purchase.8

A lab grown diamond ring resizes like any other. The work is in the metal, not the stone.

01Confirm the size first

Measure at the end of the day, on the finger the ring will be worn on, with a rigid sizer. A second resize costs as much as the first.

02Check whether the design can be resized

Eternity bands, tungsten, ceramic and many tension settings cannot be resized in the usual way. Ask before you pay for anything.

03Ask for the price by metal and direction

Quote the metal, the band width, the number of stones and how many sizes, up or down. Those four facts set the price.

04Ask what happens to the stones

Stones near the cut may need tightening, and heat sensitive stones may need removing. Ask whether that is included.

05Check the seller's own policy

Many jewellers include a resize after purchase. Read the window, the number of sizes and who pays shipping before you go elsewhere.

Before you order, see our guides to measuring ring size at home and finding her ring size secretly.

FAQ
Common questions

Resizing, answered

How much does it cost to resize a ring in Canada?

Usually CAD 45 to CAD 250 for one size. At FTJCo in Toronto, a 14K gold band costs CAD 125 to size down and CAD 180 to size up; platinum costs CAD 170 down and CAD 250 up; silver without stones costs CAD 45 down and CAD 60 up.

Is it cheaper to make a ring smaller or bigger?

Smaller. Sizing down removes metal, and some jewellers credit it against the price. In Toronto, a 14K band costs CAD 125 to size down and CAD 180 to size up one size.

How many sizes can a ring be resized?

Generally about two sizes up or down. Each extra size costs more, and some designs, such as tension settings, are limited to about two sizes.

Can an eternity band be resized?

Generally no. Stones run all the way around the band, leaving no plain metal to cut. Choose the size carefully before ordering one.

Can tungsten or titanium rings be resized?

Tungsten generally cannot. Titanium is disputed: one jeweller says it cannot be resized, another says it sometimes can with more complex work. Ceramic and wood rings typically cannot.

Does Draco resize rings for free?

Every Draco ring includes one complimentary resize within 60 days of delivery, up to two sizes up or down. You cover shipping to Draco, and Draco covers the return trip. Some designs cannot be resized, and Draco discloses this before purchase.
