How to Find Her Ring Size Secretly, and Why a Wrong Guess Should Run Large

A borrowed ring, a pencil tracing, a bar of soap or a trusted friend. Six quiet ways to get the size, ranked, and the arithmetic of guessing high rather than low.

The most reliable secret method is a ring she already wears on her ring finger. Borrow it, measure it or take it to a jeweller, and return it before it is missed.

The ring has to come from the right finger. A ring from her middle finger, her index finger or her thumb measures a different finger.1

It also has to come from the right hand. Her two ring fingers are rarely the same: the left typically runs about half a size smaller. If the borrowed ring lives on her right hand, tell the jeweller.1

A jeweller reads a borrowed ring in seconds on a ring stick. If you measure it yourself, measure the inside diameter in millimetres. The inside must be perfectly round for the reading to hold.3

Six methods

Which secret method is the most reliable?

Anything rigid beats anything remembered. A borrowed ring comes first, then a tracing, a soap print and a friend's knowledge. Guessing from averages comes last.

Six quiet ways to find a ring size, ranked by reliability
Method What you need Main risk Reliability
Borrow a ring she wears A ring from her ring finger, for a day She notices it is gone Highest
Trace the inside of a ring A sharp pencil and paper A line wider than half a size Good
Press a ring into soap A bar of soap and a ring A smudged or tilted print Fair
Ask a friend or relative Someone she trusts who knows A guess passed on as a fact Fair
Try her ring on your finger A ring and a pen mark Fingers differ in shape Low
Guess from averages Nothing No reliable average exists Lowest

The ranking is Draco's, built from GIA's guidance. GIA lists the same quiet options: borrow a ring from her jewellery box, press one she wears into soap, or trace its inside on paper.12

Each method fails in its own way. A borrowed ring can be missed. A tracing can be off by the width of the pencil line. A friend can pass on a guess as a fact.

So use two methods if you can. A tracing and a friend's answer that agree are stronger than either one alone.

Trying her ring on your own little finger is the weakest of the hands on methods. Fingers differ in shape, and a pen mark on a knuckle is hard to read twice.

03
Tracing and soap

A tracing or a soap print works if it is precise

If you can borrow a ring only for a minute, take a record of it. A pencil tracing of the inside, or a print pressed into soap, can travel to a jeweller in your pocket.

Half a size is 0.4 mm across

Inside diameters of US and Canadian sizes 6, 6.5 and 7, drawn to the same scale. A tracing has to resolve a gap this small.

Precision is the whole job. Half a size is about 0.4 mm of inside diameter. A thick pencil line is wider than that, so trace with the finest pencil you own and measure to the inside of the line.

01Choose the right ring

Use a ring she wears on her ring finger, on the hand the new ring will go on. Note which hand it came from.

02Use a sharp pencil

A fine mechanical pencil draws the thinnest line. A thick line can hide half a size on its own.

03Trace the inside edge

Hold the ring flat on paper and trace around the inside, keeping the pencil upright against the metal.

04Trace it twice more

Repeat on fresh paper. Three tracings show whether your hand moved.

05Measure across the inside of the line

Measure the widest point of the circle in millimetres, to the inside of the pencil line. 17.3 mm is a US and Canadian size 7.

06Take the tracing to a jeweller

Bring the tracing, and say which hand the ring came from. A jeweller can read it against a calibrated gauge.

Soap works on the same principle. Press a ring she wears on her ring finger into a bar of soap until it leaves an impression, then bring the soap to a jeweller.2

Keep the ring flat and press straight down. A tilted press stretches the print into an oval and makes the ring read larger.

04
Asking around

Friends and family can ask the question for you

Someone close to her may already know the size, or can find out without suspicion. A sister, a parent or a close friend can ask in passing, or try on her rings together.

Choose one person, and one who can keep a secret. Every extra person who knows is another way for the plan to reach her.

Ask for a measurement, not an opinion. A friend's guess passed on as a fact is the weakest evidence on the list. A friend who borrowed her ring and measured it is among the strongest.

Her own records can help too. A receipt, an appraisal or a resize ticket from an earlier ring may list the size.

05
Guessing

If you have to guess, should you guess large?

Yes. A ring that is slightly large can be worn on the night and sized down afterwards. A ring that is too small may not pass the knuckle at all.

Jewellers agree on the direction. Taking metal out of a band is simpler work than adding it.1

The price list agrees too. At FTJCo, a Toronto goldsmith, sizing a 14K band down costs CAD 125 and sizing it up one size costs CAD 180. Sizing down includes a credit for the metal removed.5

The gap holds in every metal on the list. In 18K gold, down costs CAD 135 and up CAD 210. In platinum, CAD 170 and CAD 250.5

"Sizing a 14K band down costs CAD 125 in Toronto. Sizing it up costs CAD 180. If you have to guess, guess large."

Averages are a poor guide. Retailers publish typical sizes, but the ones we found cite no study and disagree with each other by a full size.

Large has a limit. A ring two sizes too big can slip off on the night. One size large is a safer margin than two.

06
The proposal

A proposal ring only has to fit for one evening

The ring does not need a perfect fit on the night. It needs to clear the knuckle and stay on. A ring that is a little large can be sized properly afterwards.

Rings can generally be resized two sizes up or down from their original size. A guess within one size is well inside that range.2

Some designs are harder. Eternity bands, with stones all the way around, leave no plain metal to cut. If you are guessing, choose a design with a plain band at the back.

Plan the timing as well as the size. Draco's complimentary resize runs for 60 days from delivery, up to two sizes up or down. If the proposal is months away, order closer to the date.6

07
After the yes

A free sizer settles the final fit after the yes

Once the secret is out, measure properly. Draco mails a plastic ring sizer free to addresses in Canada and the United States, so she can measure at home.

Measure at the end of the day, on the finger the ring will live on, three times. Then use the complimentary resize to set the final fit.6

You cover shipping to Draco for the resize, and Draco covers the return trip. Some ring designs cannot be resized, and Draco discloses this before purchase.6

For the measuring itself, our guide to measuring ring size at home ranks five methods. For what a resize costs elsewhere, see ring resizing prices in 2026.

Every Draco piece carries 30 day returns, the Lifetime Authenticity Guarantee, free resizing, and free insured worldwide shipping to 25 markets, delivered duty paid with nothing collected at the door, and signature on delivery. Each piece is IGI certified, E to F colour and VS2 or better, with a report you can verify free at IGI.org.

FAQ
Common questions

The quiet size, answered

How can I find her ring size without her knowing?

Borrow a ring she wears on her ring finger and have a jeweller measure it. If you cannot borrow it for long, trace the inside with a sharp pencil or press it into soap. A trusted friend or relative may also know her size.

Should I size up or down for a surprise proposal?

Size up. A slightly large ring can be worn on the night and sized down later, which is easier and usually cheaper than sizing up. One size large is a safer margin than two.

Does it matter which hand the borrowed ring came from?

Yes. The left ring finger is typically about half a size smaller than the right. Tell the jeweller which hand and which finger the ring came from.

What is the average ring size for a woman?

There is no reliable average. Retailers publish typical sizes, but the ones we found cite no study and disagree by a full size. A borrowed ring is far better evidence.

How accurate is tracing a ring?

It can be close, if the line is fine. Half a size is only about 0.4 mm of inside diameter, so trace with a sharp pencil, measure to the inside of the line and trace it three times.

Can the ring be resized after the proposal?

Usually. Rings can generally be resized two sizes up or down. Every Draco ring includes one complimentary resize within 60 days of delivery, up to two sizes up or down. Some designs cannot be resized, and Draco discloses this before purchase.
