Against mined stones the gap is wider still. A finished lab grown diamond costs 80 to 90 percent less than its mined equivalent, per BriteCo. The stones are the same material: carbon crystal, Mohs 10 hardness, with no aging mechanism. They do not cloud, fade, or change color, per GIA.
Why did prices fall this far?
Production scaled faster than demand, and the market repriced toward cost. De Beers launched Lightbox in 2018 at 800 USD per carat, then announced its closure on May 9, 2025, stating that lab grown wholesale jewelry prices had fallen about 90 percent and were tracking toward cost plus. When the world's largest mined diamond company exits the category on price, the direction of the market is not in dispute.
Grading followed the same logic. On October 1, 2025, GIA stopped applying 4Cs nomenclature to lab grown diamonds, replacing it with premium and standard tiers, and stated that more than 95 percent of lab grown stones fall in one narrow color and clarity band.
