Mall Jeweler vs Online: What Lab Diamonds Really Cost at the Chains
You have a quote from a mall or chain store. Here is why that number carries the most markup in the market, and how to compare it like for like before you sign.
The author is the founder of Draco Diamond, a Canadian direct to consumer lab grown diamond brand. Competitor references describe retail tiers and business models, not named prices. Third party price data is cited to its source. All Draco prices in CAD.
Why do mall and chain jewelers cost more for the same lab diamond?
A chain quote is higher because it funds a store, not just a stone. When you take a quote at a mall counter, the price you are handed covers the diamond and everything wrapped around it. Prime mall rent. Lit floor space and display cases. Commissioned sales staff. Inventory that sits under bright lights for months before it sells, financed the whole time. Every one of those costs is real, and every one of them is added to the tag before you ever see it.
Lab grown diamonds make the markup easier to see. The stone itself has fallen in price. A finished lab grown diamond now costs 80 to 90 percent less than its mined equivalent, according to BriteCo, and wholesale lab grown fell roughly 74 percent between 2020 and 2025 per Edahn Golan Diamond Research. When the underlying stone drops that far but the retail tag barely moves, the difference is structure. The mall model was built for scarce mined goods and expensive real estate, and it still prices as if the diamond were the rare part.
The scale of the collapse is worth sitting with. De Beers launched its own lab grown line, Lightbox, at 800 USD per carat, then closed it in May 2025 and said lab grown wholesale jewelry prices had fallen about 90 percent, tracking toward cost. Anglo American has written down De Beers by 6.8 billion USD over three years. The loose stone is no longer the expensive part of the transaction. In a mall quote, the expensive part is the building it is sold in.
"The stone is identical. What changes at a chain is how many businesses have to be paid before it reaches your hand."
Garrett McMartin, Founder, Draco Diamond
What is the structural reason a direct to consumer brand undercuts a chain?
A direct to consumer brand sells one layer instead of many. A traditional chain diamond can pass through a cutter, a wholesaler, a distributor, and a retail group before it reaches a mall case. Each hand takes a margin. A direct to consumer brand sources the certified stone and sells it straight to the buyer, so there is a single markup rather than a stack of them.
That is why the same IGI grades can price so differently. Direct to consumer brands routinely price 40 to 60 percent below multi tier retailers for identical specifications. Draco publishes the figure against named benchmarks: up to 64 percent below Blue Nile and up to 52 percent below James Allen for a matched IGI certified stone. The number is not a promotion. It is what happens when you remove the tiers that a mall price has to carry.
The chains themselves are consolidating around this pressure. Signet, the parent group behind several of the largest mall jewelry brands, announced on March 19, 2026 that jamesallen.com would go dark in early August 2026 and fold into Blue Nile as a collection, with roughly 100 store closures. When the retail structure is under that much strain, the buyer paying full mall markup is subsidising the model, not the diamond.
How do you compare a chain quote like for like?
Compare the specification, not the sales pitch. A mall quote is only comparable to an online price when both describe the same certified stone. Marketing words such as premium or near colourless mean nothing until they are checked against the grades on an independent report. Work through four steps before you judge any quote.
The grading landscape actually makes this easier. GIA stopped applying the traditional four Cs nomenclature to lab grown diamonds on October 1, 2025, and noted that more than 95 percent of lab grown stones fall within one narrow colour and clarity band. In practice that means most quality lab grown diamonds are near identical on paper, so a specification really is a fair basis for comparison. A diamond tester will not separate them either, because a lab grown stone is carbon crystal identical to a mined one and reads as diamond every time.
Write down the exact carat weight, colour grade, clarity grade, and cut grade on the chain quote. These four fields drive most of a diamond's value. A vague quote with no grades is not comparable to anything.
Ask which laboratory graded the stone and get the report number. IGI is the leading standard for lab grown diamonds. Verify the report free at IGI.org and match every field to the listing.
Compare the same metal and setting on both sides. A quote in 14K white gold is not comparable to a platinum price. Separate the stone cost from the mounting so you know what each part costs.
Line up the final price for identical specifications, including shipping and any resizing. When the certificates match field for field, the only variable left is what each seller charges for the same stone.
What is a lab diamond actually worth per carat right now?
Loose lab grown diamond averages give you a floor to judge any quote against. As of May 2026, StoneAlgo reported average lab grown prices of 564 USD for a one carat stone, 1,265 USD at two carats, 1,865 USD at three carats, and 2,588 USD at five carats. Those are averages for loose certified stones, not finished jewelry, but they anchor the conversation. If a mall is quoting many multiples of the loose stone value for a simple solitaire, the markup is doing the talking.

The per carat trend has nearly flattened. StoneAlgo recorded a year over year decline of about 2.59 percent, the smallest quarterly declines in two years, a sign that premium certified stones have reached a production cost floor. Published wholesale figures put quality lab grown rough in the range of 250 to 500 USD per carat. Those two facts together tell you the loose stone has a known, low floor, and any quote far above it is charging for something other than the diamond.
Draco prices finished pieces in Canadian dollars against that reference. The five carat round brilliant lab diamond tennis bracelet is listed at 2,720 CAD, and a three carat tennis bracelet at approximately 1,801 CAD, every stone IGI certified E to F colour and VS2 or better. When the finished piece sits close to the loose stone reference, the structure is working for the buyer instead of against them.
What about Canadian chains like Peoples?
Canadian mall chains follow the same tier model, and often the same parent. Peoples is a mall based Canadian chain that operates within the same large retail group as several United States mall brands. The cost structure that lifts a Kay or Zales quote in an American mall lifts a Peoples quote in a Canadian one. Prime retail space, staffed showrooms, and financed inventory do not get cheaper north of the border.
Buyers have already moved, which is why this comparison matters. BriteCo reported that 47.7 percent of engagement rings now use a lab grown centre stone, and The Knot Real Weddings Study 2026 put 61 percent of engagement ring centre stones as lab grown, up 239 percent since 2020. The audience walking into a mall counter is increasingly there for a lab grown stone. The only open question is whether they pay the mall structure or the direct one.
A Canadian direct to consumer brand changes the comparison. Draco is a Canadian brand that ships domestically, prices in Canadian dollars, and sells the certified stone without the mall layer. For a Canadian buyer holding a Peoples quote, the like for like question is simple. Same IGI grades, same metal, what is the total price. That is the comparison the chain model is least comfortable with, and the one worth making before you sign anything.
Chain store cost drivers vs direct to consumer
The two models charge for different things. The diamond is constant. What differs is the machinery each price has to support.
| Cost driver | Mall or chain jeweler | Direct to consumer |
|---|---|---|
| Retail rent | Prime mall floor space | None |
| Sales staff | Commissioned showroom teams | Lean, no commission |
| Inventory financing | Stock held and financed for months | Sourced to order |
| Pricing tiers | Wholesale to distributor to retail group | Single markup |
| Certification | Varies by brand | IGI certified, E to F, VS2 and better |
| Result on a matched stone | Full mall markup | Up to 64 percent below Blue Nile |
Read the table as a checklist for your own quote. Every row on the left is a cost you are asked to fund. Every row on the right is a cost that has been removed. Mall jeweler vs online quote FAQ
Is an online lab diamond the same quality as one from a mall jeweler?
Yes, when both are graded to the same IGI specification. A lab grown diamond is a carbon crystal with the same physical and optical properties as a mined diamond, and an IGI report describes it the same way regardless of where it sells. Match the colour, clarity, cut, and carat, verify the report number at IGI.org, and you are comparing the same stone.
Why is the mall or chain store quote so much higher for the same specs?
A chain price funds a store as well as a stone. Mall rent, showroom floor space, commissioned staff, and financed inventory are all built into the tag, and the diamond often passes through several pricing tiers before it reaches the case. A direct to consumer brand removes those layers, which is why it can price up to 64 percent below Blue Nile on a matched IGI stone.
Do Canadian chains like Peoples price lab diamonds differently?
Canadian mall chains follow the same tier model as their United States counterparts, often within the same parent group. The retail cost structure does not get cheaper in a Canadian mall. A Canadian direct to consumer brand that ships domestically and prices in Canadian dollars removes the mall layer while keeping the same IGI grades.
How do I compare a mall jeweler quote to an online price?
Record the exact carat, colour, clarity, and cut from the quote. Confirm the certifying laboratory and get the report number. Match the metal and setting on both sides, then compare the total delivered price for identical specifications. When the certificates match field for field, price is the only remaining variable.
Can Draco beat a quote from a mall or chain jeweler?
Send us the comparable piece and we will review it. On a matched IGI certified specification, direct pricing runs up to 64 percent below Blue Nile and up to 52 percent below James Allen. Founder reviewed, no obligation, with a quote back in one to three business days. Same certified stone, direct price.
Are lab grown diamonds a good investment?
Buy a lab grown diamond for beauty and size, not resale. Lab grown typically recovers 20 to 40 percent of purchase price on resale, similar to most fine jewelry. The value of buying direct is paying less at the start for the same certified stone, rather than expecting the piece to appreciate.
