Will People Judge a Lab Grown Diamond? 6 in 10 Engagement Rings Are Lab Grown Now

Few people will, and the ones who might are easy to answer. Here is what to say when someone asks, who you should tell, and the honest trade off that has nothing to do with what anyone thinks.

What to say

Say what it is: a lab grown diamond. It is the same material as a mined diamond, so the honest answer is also the confident one. You do not need to say more unless you want to.

The facts are on your side. US rules define a diamond as pure carbon crystallized in the isometric system, with no requirement that it be mined.8

The one thing to avoid is letting it pass as mined. Canadian advertising guidelines require the words lab grown, lab created or synthetic immediately before the word diamond.10

Those rules bind sellers, not you, but the same habit serves you well. Name it plainly, and there is nothing for anyone to catch out.

01When someone admires it

“Thank you. It's a lab grown diamond, and I love it.”

02When someone asks what it is

“It's a lab grown diamond. Same carbon, same crystal, grown instead of mined.”

03When someone asks if it is real

“It's a lab grown diamond, the same material as a mined one. A fake would be glass or cubic zirconia.”

04When someone calls it synthetic

“Synthetic means made by people, not imitation. It's a lab grown diamond, not a look alike.”

05When you ask a partner without spoiling the surprise

“Same budget: a bigger lab grown diamond, or a smaller mined one?”

Judgement

Six in ten engagement rings are now lab grown, so few people will judge

Most people buying engagement rings now choose lab grown, so a lab grown ring is the norm, not the exception. The share has grown fivefold since 2019.

Lab grown centre stones were in 61 percent of engagement rings bought by US couples married in 2025, a 239 percent increase since 2020. The study surveyed 10,474 couples.1

The share was 12 percent in 2019, 46 percent in 2023 and 52 percent in 2024, the year lab grown first passed mined.2

For many couples it is a positive choice. 40 percent said it was specifically important to them that their stone be lab grown.1

Younger buyers care least about origin. Only 22 percent of Gen Z and 28 percent of millennials say a natural stone is important to them.4

These are US figures. We found no comparable national survey for Canada, so read them as the closest guide to a market that shops the same brands and the same stones.

"Lab grown went from 12 percent of US engagement rings in 2019 to 61 percent in 2025. The question has changed from why lab grown to why not."

Your partner

Tell your partner, and ideally choose the ring together

Tell your partner, ideally before you buy. Most ring recipients help choose the ring anyway, and a stone's origin is written on it, so a secret would not keep.

79 percent of ring recipients take part in choosing the ring, and one in four couples shop at a retailer together before the proposal.3

The origin travels with the stone. IGI inscribes every lab grown diamond it grades with words identifying its lab grown origin.11

If you want to keep the proposal a surprise, ask about the trade off instead of the ring. One question does it: same budget, a bigger lab grown diamond or a smaller mined one?

Those averages frame the conversation well: a larger stone for less, or a mined stone for more. Either answer is a good one, as long as it is shared.3

04
Family

Will my parents or older relatives judge it?

They are more likely to ask than your friends are. Openness to lab grown falls steeply with age, so expect questions from older relatives and answer them with the facts.

In a 2025 YouGov poll of UK adults, 49 percent of 18 to 24 year olds would consider buying lab grown, against 35 percent of 35 to 44s and 17 percent of over 55s.5

Some doubts are about meaning. 18 percent felt lab grown diamonds are less meaningful, while 52 percent would be happy to receive one as an engagement ring.5

A simple answer usually settles it. It is a diamond, grown rather than mined, and the ring means what it meant to the two of you when you chose it.

Two facts help with any relative who doubts it. Lab grown was the choice in 61 percent of US engagement rings in 2025, and a lab grown diamond is graded by the same kind of laboratory report as a mined one.1

05
Tacky

A lab diamond is not tacky, but a mismatched or misdescribed one can be

Lab grown is not tacky in itself; it is the majority choice. What reads as tacky is the same for any ring: a stone out of proportion to the hand, or a claim that is not true.

Most people are open to it. In a 2025 survey for The Plumb Club, 74 percent said they were open to receiving a lab grown engagement ring.6

Preference is still split. Asked to choose, 33 percent preferred lab grown, 30 percent natural, and 37 percent said they lacked the information to decide.6

Between two diamonds of the same quality, 49 percent would pick natural, 17 percent lab grown and 34 percent had no preference. The Plumb Club's members sell both, so read it as a fair sign that taste differs.6

Size is the more common worry. If the stone feels large for your hand, see how to judge it in is my diamond too big.

06
Friends and work

You owe no one an explanation, only an honest answer if asked

You do not need to announce it, and you do not need to hide it. If a friend or coworker asks, answer plainly. If no one asks, there is nothing to explain.

Nobody can tell by looking. There are no reliable visual clues to a lab grown diamond; identifying one takes a laboratory, so the subject only comes up if you raise it or someone asks.9

When it does come up, the scripts above work with anyone. Short, factual answers end the conversation; long defences invite more questions.

Treat a question as a question, not a challenge. Most people who ask are curious, and many are weighing the same choice for themselves.

Sometimes “is it real” really means “what did it cost”. You can answer the first and leave the second private; price is nobody's business but yours.

07
Regret

Resale value is the honest trade off, not what people think

The real reason to think twice about lab grown is money, not opinion. A lab grown diamond costs far less than a mined one and holds far less value if you ever sell it.

In BriteCo's 2025 appraisal data, the median natural diamond engagement ring sold for US$12,961 and the median lab grown ring for US$4,557.7

Resale markets for lab grown diamonds are thin. If you might sell, read the downsides of lab grown diamonds first; if you will wear it for life, resale rarely matters.

No independent survey we could find measures how many lab grown owners regret the choice. Weigh the decision on what you can measure: the stone, the price and the resale.

FAQ
Common questions

Lab grown and other people, answered

Will people judge me for a lab grown engagement ring?

Few will. 61 percent of US couples married in 2025 chose a lab grown centre stone. Older relatives are likelier to ask, so have a short, factual answer ready.

Should I tell people my diamond is lab grown?

You do not need to announce it. If someone asks, say it is a lab grown diamond. Never let it pass as mined.

Should I tell my partner the ring is lab grown?

Yes. 79 percent of ring recipients help choose the ring, and IGI inscribes every lab grown diamond it grades with its origin.

Can a jeweller tell my diamond is lab grown just by looking?

No. There are no reliable visual clues; identification takes laboratory instruments. A jeweller can, however, read a laser inscription on the girdle under magnification.

Is a lab grown diamond tacky?

No. It is the majority choice for US engagement rings. What looks tacky is the same for any ring: a stone out of proportion to the hand, or a false claim about it.

What do I say if someone asks if my diamond is real?

Say it is a lab grown diamond, the same material as a mined one. A fake would be glass or cubic zirconia.

Will my parents think a lab grown diamond is less special?

Some may. Openness falls with age: in a UK poll, 49 percent of 18 to 24 year olds would consider lab grown, against 17 percent of over 55s.
