Coloured Lab Grown Diamonds: Pink, Blue and Yellow Explained
What actually makes a lab diamond pink, blue or yellow, why fancy colour is graded on a different scale than white stones, and why the savings against natural fancy colour are the most extreme in the whole diamond market.

How do lab grown diamonds get their colour?
A diamond is pure carbon, and pure carbon is colourless. Colour appears when something interrupts that perfect lattice, and in a laboratory that interruption can be controlled. Two colours are grown in, and one is created after the stone is finished.
Blue comes from boron. When boron atoms sit in the carbon lattice they absorb red, yellow and green light and let blue pass through, which is the same mechanism behind the famous natural blues. Yellow comes from nitrogen. Nitrogen absorbs blue light, so the stone reads yellow, and the more nitrogen present the deeper the canary tone. Both elements can be introduced during growth, which is why a well made blue or yellow lab diamond is uniform and stable.
Pink is the different one. Pink lab grown diamonds do not take their colour during growth. The colour is created afterward through irradiation and annealing, a controlled process that bombards the crystal and then heats it, building nitrogen vacancy colour centres that absorb light and leave a pink to red hue. The treatment is permanent and stable under everyday wear. How is fancy colour graded differently from D to Z?
White diamonds are graded on the GIA D to Z scale, where D is colourless and Z shows a light yellow or brown tint. On that scale colour is a fault, and less of it costs more. The full white grading logic sits in the 4Cs colour and clarity guide.
Fancy colour diamonds sit off the end of that scale, and they are graded on their own system. A grader assesses three things. Hue is the colour itself, and labs recognise a wide range of them. Tone is how light or dark the colour is. Saturation is how strong and pure it is. Those combine into intensity grades that run from Faint and Very Light up through Fancy, Fancy Intense and Fancy Vivid, with Fancy Deep and Fancy Dark for the darker tones. Fancy Vivid sits at the top, and it needs full saturation and a pure hue at once.

The practical difference is simple. On a white stone you read the report to confirm the colour is absent. On a fancy colour stone you read it to confirm the colour is present and strong. Why are coloured lab diamonds so much cheaper than natural?
Because natural fancy colour is the rarest thing in the entire market. Roughly one natural rough diamond in ten thousand shows any fancy colour at all, and for blue or pink the odds run closer to one in twenty four thousand. The single mine that produced most of the world's natural pink diamonds, the Argyle mine in Western Australia, closed in November 2020 after supplying about ninety percent of global pink supply. Natural vivid pink has since reached up to about 3 million USD per carat.
A lab makes the same colour on demand. The rarity vanishes, but the diamond does not. A Draco fancy pink radiant runs about 579 CAD per carat, roughly 423 USD per carat, against a natural equivalent that lives in the millions. This is why coloured stones are where a lab diamond saves you the most. On a white stone the lab saving is large. On a fancy colour stone it is total.

How do you style pink, blue and yellow?
A fancy colour stone is already the statement, so the setting supports it rather than competing. A white diamond halo is the classic move. It frames the colour, makes the centre read larger, and gives the eye a bright edge that deepens the hue by contrast.
Metal choice changes the read. White gold and platinum keep the focus on the colour and cool a yellow slightly. Yellow gold warms a canary stone and flatters pink. For blue, a white metal is the cleaner frame. Pink pairs well with rose gold when you want the colour to feel soft, and with white metal when you want it to feel modern.
Scale is the other lever. A small fancy colour, such as a 0.25ct blue or a 0.40ct pink, reads as a quiet signature and layers easily. A statement stone, such as a 5ct pink or a 5.73ct blue, is meant to be the whole look. Both work. The choice is how loud you want the colour to speak.
How to choose a coloured lab grown diamond
Four checks turn a pretty colour into a confident purchase.
Confirm the hue and the intensity grade. A Fancy or Fancy Intense grade tells you the colour is genuinely present and strong, not a faint tint at the end of the white scale.
Fancy colour shifts under different light. Ask for a clear video or an in person view so you see the hue you are actually buying, not a studio boosted version.
A white diamond halo and a white metal deepen most colours. Rose gold softens pink, yellow gold warms a canary. Let the frame support the colour.

Is a pink lab grown diamond real?
Yes. A pink lab grown diamond is real diamond, the same carbon crystal with the same hardness and optical properties as any other diamond. How is fancy colour graded compared to the white diamond scale?
White diamonds use the D to Z scale, where D is colourless and colour lowers value. Fancy colour diamonds are graded on a separate system based on hue, tone and saturation, with intensity grades from Faint up to Fancy Vivid.
