The honest number

What does a custom lab diamond ring actually cost

Custom cost is not a mystery number. A custom ring is a loose diamond plus a setting, priced at direct rates rather than legacy retail. The single largest line item is the centre stone, and lab grown stone prices have fallen far enough that the maths now favours the buyer. A certified 1 carat loose stone averaged about 770 CAD (564 USD) in May 2026, down from roughly 3,410 USD per carat in 2020.1

The centre stone is the largest line item in any custom quote. Everything else is metal and setting labour.

Those are loose stone averages, not finished ring prices. To the stone you add the metal and the labour of the setting. Because Draco prices direct, the finished figure lands well below multi tier retail for the identical IGI specification. The exact number depends on the four factors below, which is precisely why a quote is the accurate way to price a custom piece rather than a generic sticker.

"Custom does not mean a markup. It means the stone you want and the setting you want, priced from the stone up."

Four steps, no obligation

How does the custom quote process work

The process is deliberately simple and founder reviewed at every step. You do not need drawings or specifications. A screenshot is enough to start.

01Send the piece or the idea

Send a competitor listing, a photo of a ring you love, a Pinterest screenshot, or a rough sketch. Include the shape, rough carat, and metal if you know them. If you do not, that is fine.

02Founder review and stone sourcing

Garrett reviews the request personally and sources the matching IGI certified stone, E to F colour and VS2 or better, to the size and shape you asked for.

03Receive an itemised quote

You receive a clear quote in one to three business days, with the stone, the metal, and the setting broken out. There is no obligation and no pressure to proceed.

04Approve and we build

Approve the quote and the piece goes into production, then ships with its IGI certificate. The report can be provided on request before purchase and verified free at IGI.org.

Every finished piece carries the same terms as the catalogue: 30 day returns, Lifetime Authenticity Guarantee, free ring resizing, free insured worldwide shipping to 25 markets, signature on delivery, IGI certified E to F colour VS2 and better. Prefer to explore shapes first? The interactive ring builder lets you preview combinations before you ask for a quote.

03
Factor by factor

What actually drives the price of a custom ring

Four variables move a custom quote. Understanding them tells you where the money goes and where it does not.

Loose stone cost climbs with carat

Average lab grown loose stone price, CAD, by carat weight. Carat is the single largest driver of a custom quote.

What changes a custom quote, factor by factor
Pricing factor Effect on your quote
Stone size (carat) Largest single driver. Cost rises faster than weight.
Stone quality Moderate. Higher colour and clarity grades cost more.
Metal Meaningful step. Silver, then 10K to 18K gold, then platinum.
Setting complexity Labour driven. Solitaire is lean; pave, halo, or three stone add work.
Side stones Additive. More accent diamonds means more stone and setting cost.
Certification Fixed and included. Every centre stone is IGI certified.

Carat is where most of the budget lives. Because lab grown wholesale sits in a published range of roughly 250 to 500 USD per carat, moving up a size costs far less than it once did.2 Grades matter less than buyers expect. VS2 is eye clean, so paying for a higher clarity grade buys a distinction invisible without magnification. The clearest way to see how the same specification is priced elsewhere is to read the full lab grown engagement ring cost breakdown.

04
The pricing myth

Does custom cost more than off the shelf

Not at direct pricing. The idea that bespoke carries a premium comes from traditional jewellers, where custom work meant bench time layered on top of a showroom margin. Direct to consumer removes the showroom. The quote is built from the loose stone up, so a custom ring and a catalogue ring of the same specification are priced on the same logic.

A custom radiant cut with a vine set band. Complexity like this adds setting labour, not a bespoke surcharge.

What you are paying for is the stone and the setting, nothing else. That is why the same IGI grades can price up to 64 percent below Blue Nile and up to 52 percent below James Allen for a comparable piece. When two rings carry matching IGI reports, the price gap is the retail structure, not the diamond. Start with anything

What can you send us for a quote

Almost anything that shows what you want. The more we can see, the faster and more precise the quote. You do not need to know the technical terms.

AA competitor listing

A link or screenshot from another retailer. We match the IGI specification and price it direct, then send the comparison back.

BA photo of a piece

A ring you saw, an heirloom you want reworked, or a saved image. A single clear photo is enough to begin.

CA rough idea or sketch

A description, a mood board, or a napkin sketch. We translate it into a stone, a metal, and a setting, then quote it.

Once the request is in, the rest is founder reviewed and quoted within one to three business days. There is no cost to ask and no obligation to proceed. If you would rather start from the existing collection, browse the women's rings collection for a baseline before customising.

FAQ
Common questions

Custom quote FAQ

How much does a custom lab diamond ring cost

It depends on stone size, stone quality, metal, and setting complexity. At direct pricing the largest line item is the stone, and a certified 1 carat loose stone averaged about 770 CAD (564 USD) in May 2026. A custom ring adds the metal and the setting to that figure, priced well below multi tier retail for the same IGI specification. The precise number comes back in your free quote.

How do I get a custom diamond quote

Send a competitor listing, a photo, or a rough sketch through the quote page. Garrett reviews it personally, sources the matching IGI certified stone, and sends an itemised quote in one to three business days. The quote is free and carries no obligation.

Is the custom quote really free

Yes. There is no charge to request a quote and no pressure to proceed. You only pay if you approve the quote and choose to have the piece built.

Does custom cost more than a ready made ring

Not at direct pricing. A custom ring is priced from the loose stone plus the setting, the same logic as the catalogue. The bespoke premium that traditional jewellers charge comes from layering bench time on a showroom margin, which direct to consumer pricing removes.

Can you match a ring I saw at another retailer

In almost every case, yes. Send the listing and we match the IGI certified specification, then price it direct. For a comparable piece the result is typically up to 64 percent below Blue Nile and up to 52 percent below James Allen.

How long does a custom ring take to make

The quote returns in one to three business days. Production time depends on the design and is confirmed when you approve the quote. Every finished piece ships insured with its IGI certificate and signature on delivery.
