Do Lab Diamonds Get Cloudy, Fade, or Wear Down?

A diamond has no aging mechanism. Where the cloudy stone myth actually comes from, and why the piece you buy this year is the piece your grandchildren inherit.

The material science answer

Do lab diamonds get cloudy over time?

No. Clouding requires a physical mechanism, and diamond has none. A lab grown diamond is carbon crystal, identical in structure to a mined stone. GIA confirms lab diamonds do not cloud, fade, or change color, and that they share the same physical and optical properties as natural diamonds.

There is nothing in the stone to oxidize. There is no coating to wear off. There is no internal chemistry that shifts with age. The crystal you buy is the crystal you keep. What can accumulate is surface residue, and that is a cleaning issue, not a diamond issue.

Locked at formation

Can a lab diamond fade, yellow, or wear down?

No. Color and clarity are locked into the crystal when it forms. They do not drift afterward. At Mohs 10, diamond is the hardest material on the scale, so daily wear does not abrade the facets the way it dulls softer stones.

Quality is also more consistent than most buyers assume. On October 1, 2025, GIA stopped applying 4Cs nomenclature to lab grown diamonds and moved to premium and standard tiers. GIA stated that more than 95 percent of lab grown stones fall in one narrow color and clarity band. The material is uniform, permanent, and graded.

Blame the simulants

Where does the cloudy diamond myth come from?

Two places: simulants and dirty stones. Neither involves an actual diamond changing.

Cubic zirconia is not diamond. It is a softer simulant that clouds and dulls with wear, and decades of hazy CZ rings taught a generation that "fake stones go cloudy." Moissanite is a different crystal again. It holds up better than CZ but it is not diamond, and it reads differently on standard testers. Diamond testers measure thermal conductivity. Because a lab diamond is carbon crystal identical to natural, it reads as diamond every time, per GIA and BriteCo.

The residue, not the stone

Why does my diamond look cloudy right now?

Because it is dirty. Skin oil, lotion, sunscreen, and soap film build up on the underside of the stone. That film blocks the light return that creates sparkle. The diamond underneath is unchanged.

The constant and the variable

What changed, the diamond or the price?

The price. The stone is the constant. A 1 carat lab diamond averaged 3,410 USD per carat in 2020. StoneAlgo's May 2026 average for a 1 carat stone is 564 USD. The year over year decline has slowed to 2.59 percent, the smallest quarterly declines in two years, and premium certified stones have hit a production cost floor. The material never changed. Only the market did.

Permanence is the point

Is a lab grown diamond a real heirloom?

Yes. Permanence is the definition of an heirloom, and a lab diamond has exactly the same permanence as a natural one. It is graded, certified, and physically incapable of aging. The stone bought this year can be worn for a lifetime and passed down for generations in the same condition.

One honest caveat: buy for beauty and size, not investment. In 2026 market analyses, lab grown typically recovers 20 to 40 percent of purchase price at resale, versus 50 to 60 percent for natural. An heirloom is worn and inherited, not flipped. On that measure the two materials are equals.

Do lab grown diamonds get cloudy over time?
