How Do I Know If a Lab Grown Diamond Is High Quality?
The certificate is the floor, not the verdict. What an IGI report proves, what it was never designed to score, and the four checks that settle quality before you pay.

What does the certificate actually tell you?
An IGI report answers six questions with laboratory rigor: is this a lab grown diamond, how much does it weigh, which color band does it sit in, which clarity grade describes its inclusions, which cut band was it polished to, and does it fluoresce. Every one of those answers is verifiable by anyone, free, by entering the report number at IGI.org. For what it measures, the certificate is accurate, and it is the reason a buyer today can shop with more certainty than at any point in the industry's history.
What the certificate does not do is rank stones within a grade. That is a scope boundary, not a failure. A grading document assigns each quality to a band, and the bands are wide enough that two stones sharing every letter on the page can face up differently. The effect has grown sharper as lab grown production has converged: GIA announced that from October 1, 2025 it would describe lab grown diamonds as premium or standard rather than applying full 4Cs nomenclature, stating that more than 95 percent of lab grown stones now fall within one narrow color and clarity band. When almost everything carries similar letters, the letters alone stop separating the exceptional from the acceptable.
What spec floor should you demand?
Before any judgment beyond the paper, the paper itself has to clear a floor. Three grades do the work.
Cut: Excellent or Ideal, never traded away. Cut governs how light enters and returns from the stone, and it is the one grade whose absence is visible across the room. A high quality lab grown diamond starts with the top cut band, full stop.
Color: E to F. The colorless range without paying the D premium for a distinction no unaided eye resolves. In lab grown production the cost difference between colorless and near colorless has collapsed, so there is little reason to accept warmth.
Clarity: VS2 or better. GIA defines VS inclusions as minor and difficult for a skilled grader to see under 10x magnification, which is why VS2 is the trade's eye clean threshold: the last grade where invisible inclusions are the expectation rather than a stone by stone gamble. This floor is deliberately strict and deliberately cheap to hold. Because lab grown supply is deep, insisting on Excellent cut, E to F color, and VS2 or better costs far less than it would in mined stones, and it removes every visible compromise before the finer judgment begins.
What decides quality beyond the certificate?
Once two stones both clear the floor, the certificate has said everything it was built to say. Four qualities separate them from there, and none of them appears as a grade on the page.

None of this is a criticism of IGI. Grading laboratories measure what a laboratory can standardize, and they do it consistently. The four qualities above resist standardization because they are behaviors, not measurements, which is why the trade prices the stone rather than the paper. How do you verify quality before you buy?
The full check takes minutes, costs nothing, and requires no gemological training. Run it on any lab grown diamond, from any seller, including Draco.

Confirm the report reads Excellent or Ideal cut, E to F color, and VS2 or better clarity. On the clarity plot, note where the inclusions sit: marks near the girdle hide under prongs, while a dark crystal centered in the table deserves a closer look before you commit.
Read the fluorescence line on the report, then ask the seller directly: how does this exact stone present in daylight, and does it carry any gray or brown lean against a white background? A seller who inspects inventory answers plainly. A seller who has never looked cannot.
Watch video of the actual stone at normal zoom in ordinary light, not only the brightened studio loop. Look for even, lively light return across the whole face of the stone as it moves. If the seller cannot show the specific stone behaving in plain light, treat the cut grade as unproven.
What are the quality red flags?
Most bad purchases announce themselves before the payment page. Four signals end the conversation.
Independent certification is the baseline of the entire lab grown market. A seller who cannot or will not produce the report number is asking you to take a laboratory's job on faith.
If the verified report shows different weight, grades, or measurements than the product page, the discrepancy is the answer. Do not negotiate with it.
Quality lives in the report and the stone's behavior, not in packaging or marketing narrative. A seller who redirects every specification question back to the brand is selling the box.
If every image is a magnified, brightened render and direct questions about fluorescence, tint, or inclusion placement go unanswered, the seller has not inspected the stone. You would be the first person to look at it honestly.
What does quality mean for the price you pay?
The quality framework rewrites the price question. Below the spec floor, a discount buys a visible compromise, so the cheap stone is not a bargain. Above the floor, upgrades to VVS clarity or D color buy differences that exist only under magnification, so the expensive stone is not better looking. Is an IGI certificate enough to guarantee quality?
The certificate guarantees the floor, not the finish. IGI grading is accurate for what it measures, but grades are bands, and stones behave differently within them. What specs should a high quality lab grown diamond have?
Excellent or Ideal cut, E to F color, and VS2 or better clarity, certified by an independent laboratory such as IGI with a report you can verify online. Cut is the one grade never to trade down, because it governs light return. VS2 is the eye clean threshold, and grades above it buy differences visible only under 10x magnification.
Does fluorescence matter in a lab grown diamond?
Sometimes, which is why it is worth one direct question. The IGI report records fluorescence strength, but the recorded strength does not fully predict how a specific stone presents in daylight. Ask the seller how the exact stone behaves outdoors and against a white background. A seller who inspects inventory can answer immediately.
Why do two diamonds with identical certificates look different?
Because a certificate assigns each quality to a band rather than a point. Two stones can share cut, color, and clarity grades while differing in light return within the cut band, tint character within the color grade, fluorescence presentation, and inclusion placement. GIA has reported that more than 95 percent of lab grown stones fall in one narrow color and clarity band, so these within band differences now do most of the separating.
How can I verify a diamond certificate is real?
Enter the report number at IGI.org, which hosts a free public verification tool. The lookup returns the full report, including grades, measurements, and the clarity plot. Compare every field against the seller's listing. If the lookup fails or the details differ, do not purchase the stone.
