What Lab Diamond Certification Data Says About How Buyers Shop in 2026

It reveals that the buyer got more literate, fast. The grades a buyer selects are a record of what they understood at the moment of purchase. In 2020, 37.7 percent of lab grown diamonds sold were colorless, D to F on the grading scale. By 2025 that figure reached 85.9 percent, per BriteCo's Lab Grown vs. Natural Diamond Report. VVS clarity stones grew from 6.6 percent to 35.3 percent of sales over the same window.

This is not a marginal drift. It is a near complete turnover of the grade distribution in five years, and it happened while lab grown diamonds grew to more than 45 percent of US engagement ring purchases per 2025 to 2026 industry data. The market did not just get bigger. It got pickier.

Because the price collapse made the top of the scale affordable. A 1 carat lab diamond averaged 3,410 USD per carat in 2020. By May 2026 the StoneAlgo average for a 1 carat stone was 564 USD. Wholesale lab grown prices fell roughly 74 percent between 2020 and 2025, per Edahn Golan Diamond Research. When the premium for a colorless, VVS stone compresses to a rounding error, buyers stop settling for near colorless and SI.

The same budget logic shows up in size. BriteCo's data has the average lab grown engagement center stone growing from 1.31 carats in 2019 to 2.45 carats in 2025. Buyers did not pocket the savings. They spent the same budget on bigger, better graded stones. On October 1, 2025, GIA stopped applying its 4Cs nomenclature to lab grown diamonds and moved to premium and standard descriptors. GIA's stated reason: more than 95 percent of lab grown stones now fall within one narrow band of color and clarity. That is a statement about how uniform lab grown production quality has become, and the BriteCo distribution data backs it up.

The practical consequence for buyers is about comparison, not accuracy. Both institutes grade accurately against their own scales. But a tiered descriptor cannot tell you whether one specific stone is an E or an F, a VVS2 or a VS1. A full IGI report still grades every lab stone on the D to Z color scale and the FL to I3 clarity scale, which is what lets a buyer compare two stones and two sellers line by line. That is why the full report became the working standard for lab diamond purchases in 2026.

Both are independent, respected laboratories. The difference in 2026 is the format of the lab grown report, and what that format lets a buyer do.

Neither certificate misses anything. Each is accurate for what it measures. GIA concluded that detailed grades add little distinction when 95 percent of production sits in one band.
