Lab diamond price by carat, 2026
Here is what a lab grown diamond costs by total carat weight in 2026, set against the US retail range and the equivalent natural diamond. Draco prices are direct to consumer in CAD; retail and natural figures are USD market ranges. The pattern is consistent: the larger the stone, the wider the gap.

"In lab grown diamonds, the bigger the stone, the cheaper the carat. Natural diamonds do the opposite."
Garrett McMartin, Founder, Draco Diamond
Why price per carat falls as size rises
Natural diamonds get exponentially more expensive per carat as they grow, because large rough is rare. Lab grown inverts this: production scales, so a larger stone costs less per carat than the headline 1ct rate. A 1ct sits around $700 to $1,100 per carat at retail-direct, while multi-carat pieces fall toward the low hundreds per carat. The certificate quality, E to F color and VS2+ clarity, holds at every size.
The lab vs natural price gap
Lab grown and natural diamonds are chemically and optically identical, graded on the same 4Cs. The only difference is origin, and in 2026 the price gap is the widest it has ever been: 87 percent at 1ct, climbing past 95 percent at 10ct. A 2ct lab piece direct is roughly $999 CAD versus around $24,000 for the natural equivalent.
| Carat | Lab vs natural |
|---|---|
| 1 ct | ~87% cheaper |
| 2 ct | ~90% cheaper |
| 3 ct | ~91% cheaper |
| 5 ct | ~93% cheaper |
| 10 ct | ~95% cheaper |

Why lab diamond prices are this low in 2026
The decline is structural, not a sale. Global manufacturing capacity expanded more than 300 percent between 2020 and 2023 as new lab grown producers entered at scale, and production technology improved continuously. Supply outpaced demand, wholesale fell roughly 80 percent, and the floor is now near production cost. Direct to consumer brands pass the new cost basis on; legacy retailers largely did not, which is why the same IGI specification can cost 40 to 60 percent more at a traditional jeweler. Price per carat FAQ
How much is a 1 carat lab grown diamond in 2026?
A 1ct IGI certified lab diamond (F, VS2, round) wholesales around $680 in 2026, down from $3,410 in 2020. Direct to consumer it runs roughly $600 to $1,100, versus $5,000 to $8,000 for the natural equivalent. Draco's 1ctw round studs start at $711 CAD.
Why does price per carat fall as the diamond gets bigger?
Lab grown production scales with size, so larger stones cost less per carat than the 1ct headline rate. Natural diamonds are the opposite: large rough is rare, so per-carat price climbs sharply with size.
How much cheaper are lab diamonds than natural?
Between 87 and 95 percent cheaper for the same IGI certified specifications, with the gap widening at larger carats. A 2ct lab piece is roughly $999 CAD direct versus about $24,000 for the natural equivalent.
Why is lab diamond retail more expensive than direct to consumer?
Traditional retailers price closer to 2020 wholesale and add multi-tier markup. Direct to consumer brands pass on the current, much lower cost basis, a 40 to 60 percent difference on identical IGI specifications.
Will lab diamond prices keep falling?
The rate has slowed sharply into 2026 as wholesale approaches production cost. Prices are stabilizing at historically low levels rather than continuing the steep decline of 2020 to 2024.
