The difference is not quality or grade. It is chemistry. A lab grown diamond is carbon, crystallised in the same cubic structure as a mined diamond. It has the same hardness, the same optical behaviour, and the same physical properties as a natural diamond. It is a diamond in every sense a laboratory can measure. Moissanite is a different mineral. It is silicon carbide, a crystal of silicon and carbon. Natural moissanite is vanishingly rare, so the moissanite sold in jewellery is created in a lab. It is a beautiful, durable stone, but it is not a diamond and never becomes one. That single fact drives every practical difference that follows.
This is why the two stones are graded differently. A lab diamond is graded on the 4Cs and certified by IGI or GIA the same way a mined diamond is. Moissanite is not graded on the diamond scale at all, because it is not being measured against diamond standards. Hardness and durability
Diamond is the hardest known natural material, graded Mohs 10. Moissanite sits just below it at roughly Mohs 9.25. Both rank near the top of the Mohs scale, and both are hard enough to wear every day for a lifetime.
The practical takeaway is honest on both sides. Diamond resists scratching better than anything else on earth, which matters for a ring worn daily for decades. Moissanite is still extremely hard, harder than sapphire, and far more scratch resistant than the everyday hazards a stone actually faces. Sparkle and fire: the visible difference

Can people tell moissanite from a diamond?

Moissanite is the cheaper stone. For a given size it typically costs less than a lab grown diamond, and that has always been its strongest argument.
