A lab grown diamond costs 69 to 98 percent less than natural, and the gap grows with size
On October 14, 2026, a lab grown diamond cost 69 percent less than a natural one at half a carat. At 1 carat it cost 87 percent less, and at 5 carats 98 percent less, on average asking prices.

Natural prices climb steeply with size because large natural rough is rare. A natural 5 carat averages $117,776, about 31 times the 1 carat average. A lab grown 5 carat averages $2,121, about 4 times.
So the discount is smallest where natural is cheapest. At half a carat, lab grown still costs 31 percent of the natural price; at 5 carats it costs under 2 percent.

Shape moves natural prices by 92 percent and lab grown prices by 13 percent
At 1 carat, a natural round averages $4,693 and a natural heart $2,444, a 92 percent spread. In lab grown the same shapes cost $487 and $471, and no shape strays far from $500.

The round premium is a natural diamond story. A natural round costs 67 percent more than a natural emerald cut; a lab grown round costs 8 percent less than a lab grown emerald.34

That puts the deepest discount on the shapes natural buyers pay most for. A lab grown round costs 10 percent of a natural round; a lab grown heart costs 19 percent of a natural heart.
At 2 carats the pattern holds. Natural rounds, ovals, pears and marquises sit between $19,142 and $19,908, while the same lab grown shapes run $982 to $1,360.
What does US$1,000 buy in lab grown and natural?
About US$1,000 buys an average natural half carat, at $1,060, or an average lab grown 2 carat, at $1,024. The same money buys four times the diamond weight.
At the natural 1 carat average of $3,820, a lab grown buyer can reach 5 carats, averaging $2,121, with $1,699 to spare.
Set in jewellery, the comparison holds. Draco's 2 carat round engagement ring, IGI certified E VVS2, is CAD 1,982 in 10K gold, about US$1,394. That is a finished ring for about a third of a loose natural 1 carat.56
At the top end, a natural 2 carat averages $17,338. Draco's 50 carat lab grown tennis necklace is CAD 25,222, about US$17,734.

The two are graded differently now, so read the report
Since October 1, 2025, GIA no longer grades lab grown diamonds on the natural colour and clarity scales. It describes them as Premium or Standard. IGI still grades them from D to Z.
GIA classifies each lab grown stone of 0.15 carats or more as Premium or Standard from an overall assessment of its quality. It laser inscribes the girdle with the term Laboratory-Grown. A stone below the Standard criteria gets no GIA assessment.7
IGI's lab grown report keeps the familiar scales: D to Z in colour and IF to I3 in clarity. An IGI lab grown grade reads like a natural one.8

The comparison in this guide is grade blind: averages across all grades. A like for like quote needs the same colour, clarity and cut on both sides.
The gap is still widening at retail
In the three months to October 14, 2026, the average 1 carat lab grown asking price fell 20 percent while natural rose 4 percent. At 2 carats, lab grown fell 21 percent and natural rose under 1 percent.
Half a carat is the exception. The lab grown half carat average rose 4 percent over the same months, from a base of $331.2
Wholesale has steadied. Edahn Golan Diamond Research measured one to three carat lab grown rounds up about 2 percent in the third quarter of 2026.9 The longer history is in the lab diamond price trend report.
Natural prices have their own slide behind them. Rapaport's index for one carat natural diamonds fell 9.9 percent in 2025, then rose 0.5 percent in August 2026 and 0.3 percent in September.101112
Neither line makes a diamond an investment. Buy for the piece, at the price you would pay today.
For a buyer, the gap pays for size, setting or savings
The gap can buy a larger stone, a finer setting or simply stay in the bank. Each is a fair choice; the point is to make it knowingly, with today's prices in hand.
Most engagement buyers have already chosen lab grown. The Knot's 2026 study found a lab grown centre stone in 61 percent of engagement rings.13
Across all diamond jewellery, lab grown made up 16 percent of purchases in 2025, up from under 3 percent in 2020.14

How do you compare a lab grown and a natural quote fairly?
Match the weight, the shape and the grade, then price the finished piece on the same day. Five checks keep a lab grown and a natural quote honest with each other.
Compare stones of the same weight. Natural prices rise far faster with size than lab grown prices do, so a small difference in weight moves a natural quote more.
In natural diamonds, a round costs far more than an emerald or cushion of the same weight. In lab grown, shape barely moves the price.
Compare colour and clarity from the same laboratory. Since October 2025, GIA describes lab grown stones as Premium or Standard rather than by grade, while IGI still grades them.
Add the setting. A loose stone price is not a ring price, and the metal can cost more than a small lab grown stone.
Lab grown retail prices fell about 20 percent in three months to October 14, 2026, so a quote or a chart from last season can mislead.
